You can see phallus or even called the “Thunderbolt of Flaming Wisdom” painted on walls of buildings and houses throughout Bhutan. This is the creation of great lama Drukpa Kuenley who lived in 15th-16th centuries and popularly known as “The Devine Mad Man”. Traditionally symbols of an erect penis in Bhutan have been intended to drive away the evil eye and malicious gossip.
Drukpa Kuenley (1455-1529) migrated from Tibet who was trained in Ralung Monastery and was belonged to the period of Pema Lingpa and was also his disciple. Drupa Kuenley was crazy man who travelled Bhutan and fond of women and wine. His sexual exploits included his host and promoters of Buddhism. It was he who propagated the legend of paintings phalluses from roof tops of the houses and walls to drive away the evil spirits and subdue demonesses.
Therefore, he was also called the “Fertility saint” as the temple he built call Chimmi Lhakhang in Punakha is visited not only by Bhutanese women but also visited worldwide in blessing of child.
