Bumthang is the most historic religious heartland consisting four mountain valleys of Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor. The valley draws large number of tourist every year being the scared and scenic place. There found some of the oldest temples. The name of district is said to have arisen after construction of Jambay Lhakhang by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in 659 A.D as part of the chain of 108 temples simultaneously built in order to subdue an evil demoness that lay over the Himalayan region. It is the oldest lhakhang in Bhutan. There are numerous other temples and shrines worth visiting in Bumthang and many of them are linked to Guru Rinpoche’s visit in 746 A.D. 

They mainly grow buckwheat, rice and potatoes and also Apple orchards can be seen around the valley. This serene region is one of the most peaceful places in the kingdom. Bumthang is known for its important population of black-necked cranes migrating in winter.
